The History Behind the James River Hunt Horse Show

Many members of the James River Hunt over the years have been associated with the old Hampton horse show from its inception in the late 1920s. The Hampton horse show later became the Briarpatch horse show and since 1951 has been the James River Hunt horse show. Under the James River Hunt horse show title, the show was established at the L. M. Newcomb estate in Phoebus and then moved to the Hunt facilities in Hampton and then to the Airfield Conference Center in Wakefield where it was horse show of the year for VHSA in 1989 and 1990. In 1999 it moved to Rose Mount farm owned by The Garnett’s in Spotsylvania. In 2023, the show has since moved to Deep Run Hunt Club in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia where it will continue to run as a USEF A Rated show.
